Synopsis
Holy Wound explores female identity in a male-dominated society where women are often reduced to objects of desire and their emotions suppressed. Set in the picturesque backwaters of Kuttanad, Kerala, the film follows 25-year-old Kala, a fisherwoman trapped in an abusive marriage. Her only solace is her past relationship with Sherin, a nun and former childhood friend with whom she shared deep intimacy. The lake serves as a powerful metaphor for Kala’s emotions, reflecting her suppressed desires and struggles. The film subtly portrays themes of patriarchy, religious constraints, and the stigma surrounding lesbian love, using soft visual storytelling. It highlights society’s use of sex as a tool of control and the ultimate refuge nature provides. Holy Wound asserts that emotional wounds never fully heal; instead, they shape one’s journey, as seen in Kala’s reawakening of desire and self-discovery.
